6 Types of Weddings and What to Wear to Them

With wedding season back in full swing, it’s important that you have a few different wardrobe options to wear when you get that Save The Date invitation in the mail. Couples have all types of wedding aesthetics, so you’ll need to be prepared for whatever the theme and vibe of their wedding is. Make sure you are dressed the part so you can celebrate in style with them on their big day!

Timeless

Venue: historic location

Men: A dinner jacket with matching trousers, a pleated white shirt, black formal shoes, and a bow tie or necktie. Men can also wear a cummerbund or a waistcoat if they are going for an even more formal look.

Women: A long, floor-length dress in a solid color (no patterns) and a simple silhouette - typically a sheath fit. The accessories should also be more simplistic in style; think a pair of small gold hoop earrings or a silver chain necklace.

Classic

Venue: a church

Men: a classic button-up in a neutral color or pattern - nothing too bold. Nice slacks and dress shoes.

Women: knee-length flowing skirt with a conservative blouse and low heels.

Rustic

Venue: a barn

Women: long floral maxi dress with block or espadrille heels, lots of fun jewelry.

Men: button downs, more pattern or color than a classic wedding. Nicer jeans are welcome.

Eccentric

Venue: Mattress Factory, Allegheny Cemetery, Carnegie Science Center

Women: funky picks like bright jumpsuits and colorful heels, big statement jewelry, playing with different patterns and colors.

Men: bold, printed button downs in unique color combinations, colored chinos or trousers, fun sneakers.

A wedding reception space with many tables and floral centerpieces.

Nautical

Venue: on the beach

Women: lightweight and flowy dresses in light colors, nice sandals or dressier flip-flops.

Men: light-colored button-downs, short-sleeve button downs are okay. Tan trousers (cuffed is okay because of the sand!)

Casual

Venue: a backyard or park

Women: day dresses and simple skirts with casual sandals.

Men: polos and nicer jeans, fashion sneakers.

Whatever the theme of the wedding is, take this as a fun opportunity to dress up and try something new, based on the guide. Although these wedding themes are pretty popular choices, there are still quite a few unique picks as couples continue getting more creative and personal with their weddings. By dressing with the theme, the wedding couple will appreciate your efforts, and you’ll get to feel confident in a new outfit!
